Emergency Treatment At Our Clinic is Covered by the OHIP

Our doctors provide the same type of emergency eye care (aside from surgery) that you would find in a walk-in clinic or hospital. As such, OHIP covers your treatments in the same way they would do so at a walk-in/hospital

Chemical Burn? Seek Treatment Immediately

A chemical burn in your eye is not only painful, but if left untreated it can cause a whole host of issues. After rinsing your eye (see information at the bottom of this page) call our clinic immediately as prompt treatment is imperative. We will diagnose the damage and provide appropriate treatment and next steps. If our clinic is not open please go to the nearest emergency room.

Eye Safety Prevents Eye Emergencies!

Care should be taken when performing activities that place you in an environment or situation where eye damage is a potential risk. Sometimes these situations aren’t obvious, such as changing the oil on your car or painting your bedroom.

Invest in protective eyewear. Something as simple as wearing protective eyewear while playing sports or wrenching on your car could be the difference between a visit to our clinic (or the hospital) or not.

Chemical Burn Causes & Symptoms

Symptoms of a chemical burn on your eye include:

  • Tearing, watery eyes
  • Redness, irritation
  • Hard to see, blurred vision
  • Swelling
  • Pain

Many people don’t realize how things you use every day – paint, cleaners, glue, etc. – can impact you if they get into your eyes. It is a natural reaction to rub your eyes- do not! This can actually make the problem worse. Rinse your eyes (per the instructions on the right) and visit our clinic for diagnosis and further treatment (as required).

Rinsing Your Eyes At Home

If you get something in your eye – a chemical or contaminant of some kind – it is recommended that you rinse your eyes. If you have access to an eyewash station or bottle, use it per the directions posted on it. If there is no eyewash station nearby (such as when you are at home), rinse your eye out with cool, clean water for at least 10 minutes.

  • Tilt your head up
  • Hold your eyelid open
  • Rinse your eye with cool water thoroughly

Chemical burns in your eye should be taken seriously. In most cases, our Optometrists are just as effective as an emergency room doctor in treating chemical burns.

At GBOC we have advanced Imaging equipment called the Cirrus HD-OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography). The OCT not only takes pictures of the eye, it can also take direct cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve thereby screening for eye disease such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and glaucoma. It is a very useful tool for early diagnosis and management of eye disease.
