EYE SEE…EYE LEARN®

Every year thousands of kids in Ontario go to school without ever having an eye exam. Since up to 80% of learning comes directly from your vision, kids that suffer from developing or undiagnosed eye problems are at a disadvantage.

Children’s Eye Exams are Covered by OHIP

Did you know that OHIP provides coverage for an annual eye exam for all kids under age 20? As well, most workplace benefits programs that cover your family also provide coverage for eye exams.

The Eye See…Eye Learn® program, funded in part by the Province of Ontario, aims to set every child up for success as they begin their educational journey. The program provides an eye exam and a complimentary pair of glasses (if required). Kids entering junior kindergarten are eligible to participate.

We are proud to participate in the Eye See…Eye Learn® program. The eye exam is covered by OHIP and is of no out of pocket expense to you. If your child requires corrective glasses, they will be provided at no cost (donated by Nikon Lenswear, OGI, and our clinic).

We invite you to contact us if you have any questions about the Eye See…Eye Learn® program.

Important Information About Eye Exams for Kids

Every child should have their first eye exam before they are 18 months old. Otherwise, the Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends annual eye exams for kids under the age of 20. Note that we may recommend more frequent exams if your child has diabetes or some other condition that warrants an increased testing frequency.

Did you know that almost 75% of vision loss can be effectively avoided assuming detection and treatment? Regular eye exams are instrumental in catching impending eye diseases.

By the time they enter school, 25% of kids will have developed some kind of vision impairment. Often these are easily treated, especially if they are caught while still young.

Being a kid is hard; imagine being a kid struggling to properly see. Taking notes, reading classroom materials, and just being a kid is all much more difficult with undiagnosed and untreated eye problems.

When It Comes to Eye Care for Kids, the Details Are Key

Unfortunately, most kids simply lack the experience and perspective to articulate subtle changes to their eyesight. As a result, your child may struggle with vision problems despite not vocalizing their concerns to you (or, misattributing the cause of their challenges). As you can imagine, this can be incredibly frustrating for a child.

During our eye exam, we perform several tests that objectively measure the acuity of each eye. Leveraging advanced equipment – such as ultra-high resolution digital retinal photography – we are able to gain a clear and accurate picture of your child’s eye health. With the resulting information, we are able to make informed and educated decisions on how to best proceed with treatment (if required).

At GBOC we have advanced Imaging equipment called the Cirrus HD-OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography). The OCT not only takes pictures of the eye, it can also take direct cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve thereby screening for eye disease such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and glaucoma. It is a very useful tool for early diagnosis and management of eye disease.
