Working in Front of a Screen for Long Periods of Time Can Cause Numerous Symptoms

We’ve all been there: after many hours grinding away at your computer you find yourself struggling to focus. Your eyes are tired, itchy, and you’ve got a bit of a headache coming on. You may not even realize that the symptoms you are experiencing are indicative of digital eye strain!

Symptoms of Digital Eye Strain

  • Headaches
  • Blurry vision, dry eyes
  • Itchy, irritated eyes
  • Loss of focus, inability to retain focus
  • Decreased blink rate

These symptoms aren’t as a result of digital devices so much as they are a result of the way we use them. Your eyes tend to have an ideal focal point of about 90 centimetres in front of you. Most people sit too close to their computers or hold their smartphones too close to their eyes.

Managing and Treating Digital Eye Strain

In most cases, modifying your environment and how you use your digital devices will alleviate symptoms of digital eye strain.
Steps to take when using devices with screens:

  • When working at a computer, position your screen so that it sits at least one meter away
  • Ensure the area is well lit via ambient lighting. Be careful to avoid glare on your screen
  • Follow the 20/20/20 rule – Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds
  • Ensure your eyes are well lubricated. AKA, blink
  • Talk to your optometrist about anti-glare coatings, blue light filters, and specialized computer/office lenses

If making some environmental and lifestyle changes just aren’t cutting it, come see us. We’ll perform an in-depth exam to determine if your symptoms are indicative of digital eye strain or if they’re a byproduct of something else.

Depending on the outcome of the exam, we may recommend several different treatment options.

At GBOC we have advanced Imaging equipment called the Cirrus HD-OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography). The OCT not only takes pictures of the eye, it can also take direct cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve thereby screening for eye disease such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and glaucoma. It is a very useful tool for early diagnosis and management of eye disease.
