Benefits of Laser Eye Surgery

Stated simply, laser refractive corrective surgery provides you with an opportunity to enjoy corrective-lens free vision. The procedure – which is generally performed in under 15 minutes per eye – corrects distortion in the lens that causes many forms of impaired vision (like myopia, etc.). The end result is improved vision without using eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Surgical Consultation

Prior to a referral to an Ophthalmologist, we will assess the condition of your eyes via a comprehensive eye exam. During the consultation, we will perform a number of tests in order to determine if laser refractive surgery is a viable option for you.

Some of these include:

Corneal topography – Detailed measurements of your cornea are taken to inform the level of correction required
Inspection of eyelids and surrounding tissue – Total eye health is considered prior to a surgical referral
Confirmation of your corrective lens prescription

What to Expect During the Procedure

Laser refractive corrective surgery is generally painless, though you may experience discomfort for a few days after the surgery.
The procedure itself is quite fast:

The Ophthalmologist will numb the eye using anesthetic and clean the eye/surrounding tissue.
A flap will be cut into the cornea using either a microkeratome or a laser keratome.
When ready, you will be asked to stare at a light (or another object) while the laser is activated. This part of the process lasts for under a minute.
Once completed, you will be sent home with an eye shield and instructions on what to do next.

During the procedure you may experience blurred/hazy vision, an increase in eye pressure (specifically, during the flap creation), and some mild discomfort. When the laser is activated you may smell burning hair (or similar). This is a normal part of the procedure.

Post-Operative Care

Within two days, a follow-up exam is performed to ensure everything is as it should be. We will test your vision and examine your eye, looking for signs of complications or problems.

We will advise you of appropriate care for your eyes in the short term, including when you can return to normal activities and sports.

Post-Surgical Best Practices

Two weeks post surgery: do not apply creams/lotions or makeup to the area around the eye.
Up to three days post-surgery: no sports (even non-contact) of any kind.
Up to four weeks post surgery: no contact sports. Wear your eye shield at night.
Up to eight weeks post surgery: do not go swimming, use a sauna/steam room, or use a hot tub.
