Digital Retinal Photography enables us to diagnose and monitor eye diseases with extreme accuracy.

An Essential Part of an Eye Exam

Using our camera equipment to look into the back of your eye (a process called fundus photography) is an important diagnostic process. Thanks to fundus photography, we are able to detect eye diseases earlier in their development and with greater accuracy.

Detecting developing eye diseases early is the best way to maintain great eye health. There is no wait- the diagnostic data captured in digital photographs are accessible almost immediately.

We use the information shown in the photos to assess the blood vessels and circulatory system, check for opaque spots (that may indicate the development of eye diseases like Glaucoma or AMD), and look for retinal tears (and other types of eye damage).

How Do We Take Pictures of the Eye?

A process called fundus photography is how we are able to look into the back of your eye.

Sitting comfortably, you will rest your chin and forehead against the camera. We will then prepare and take the picture, with results available just a few moments after taking the picture.

What Does Digital Retinal Photography Teach Us?

Retinal imaging can show eye doctors a wide range of issues. These images can help with the diagnosis of the following problems:

Retinal detachment
Holes or tears in the retina
Macular degeneration
Eye damage arising from high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis or diabetes
Glaucoma
Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Retinal tears and detachments
Optic strokes
And many others

We also see signs of non-eye diseases, such as the development of diabetes or high blood pressure.

OCT Imaging

We Use the Cirrus HD OCT to Diagnose and Monitor Many Eye Conditions

Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an important imaging technique that allows our Optometrists to make more accurate diagnosis’ of many different eye diseases.

The Cirrus HD OCT measures the thickness of certain parts of your eye, creating a cross-section of the cornea, iris, optic nerve, and anterior portion of the retina.

OCT Imaging is an effective tool for the detection and monitoring of:

Glaucoma
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Diabetic retinopathy
Numerous optic nerve disorders

What Do I Do During the Scan?

When the OCT equipment is running, all you need to do is remain seated in position and follow the instructions provided. The test is painless, taking about 10 minutes to complete.

In some cases, we may need to dilate your pupils using eye drops prior to beginning the scan.

What Happens After the Scan?

The OCT machine takes hundreds of scans and analyzes them right away. Your optometrist will go over the results with you in their office. The OCT scans better enable your optometrist to detect signs of early eye disease or progression of existing disease. Any future OCT scans that are performed will always be compared to your first baseline scan to screen for progression of eye disease or development of new eye disease.

Visual Field Testing

Visual Field Testing is simple and accurate, allowing us to gain insight into eye diseases like glaucoma and neurological conditions like a stroke or brain tumour.

A Simple But Important Diagnostic Tool

Visual field testing measures your field of vision and is the gold standard for detecting Glacouma and following its progression. It is a simple, non-invasive test to perform.
These tests measure:

Your range of vision (how far up, down, left, right, etc. you are able to look without moving your head or shifting your eyes)
Peripheral vision accuracy and sensitivity
How well your eye discerns between objects and letters in various parts of your visual field

Fast, Safe, and Non-Invasive

Visual field testing relies heavily on your honest feedback. It does not involve the use of complicated equipment.

What a Visual Field Test is Looking For

Many people try to “ace” a visual field test. This actually makes it more difficult to derive information from your testing, as the purpose of the test is not to be “beaten” so much as it is to provide valuable information about your visual acuity at various points in your visual field.

By giving us perspective on your central and peripheral vision quality, a visual field test can signify the development of Glaucoma, damage to the brain’s visual pathways, and other eye diseases.
